Amazing Amp!
I bought this amplifier in 1963 & am the second owner; it replaced my first amp, a Silvertone with single 6" or 8" speaker. Of course, at the time, the tweed was pretty geeky and I quickly realized I wouldn't be getting any dates with it looking like that. So, I did what any 12 year old American Rock n Roller would do; I got a can of black spray paint and went to town on it. I took pretty great care in applying it, because the "Super Amp" label on the front is untouched. Over the years, the paint has come off sporadically and I haven't been in any rush for it to come off so I haven't tried to remove it. I'm guessing that there is someone in the world knows how to take it off, but really, I think it should be left on. You can't get much more built-in Mojo Magic than that! The cabinet is in great condition, with two phillips head screws missing from the lower panel. I never noticed that until taking the pics, so I will go to the hardware store tomorrow & pick up a couple. Except for the first 5 years of this amp's life, I can tell you that it has been worked on a total of 4 times, one of which the power cord was replaced. Whatever else has been done has only made it work well. Most recently I had it checked out by vintage electronics & tube guru, Michael Fratus, in Houston, TX. If you happen to live in a 2000 mile radius of Michael, you want him to touch your high end tube gear ... really! I don't know much about electronics, but the sound it puts out has only gotten better with age.
This amp has played many a gig, and is in remarkably good shape considering its 53 years of life. Maybe the protective paint helped? I'm sure there are some imperfections on it, but it is structurally sound, no doubt about it. Somewhere during the Jimmy Hendrix/Grand Funk Railroad & Zeppelin phase of my life, I blew out the stock Jensen's. The dealership did me a big favor and replaced the Jensen speakers with 10" Fender Musical Instrument Special Design Speakers which still bear the $20 each price tags. I recall it being a pretty hefty sum in the mid 60's because, since I played in bands, I had to pay. They were made in the USA, and my guess is by Jensen? No matter, this is one incredible sounding amplifier, and if you have ever played a 5F4, you know exactly what I mean. Here's a video clip that demonstrates the evolution of Fender Tweed Super Amps ... the one I have for sale is the last one that he plays through. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4xbAcNx-WI
I truly hope the new owner of this amp will play it and let other people hear the phenomenal sound it puts out. It will melt your blues-heart into buttah, or you can crank up the presence a bit for some of the best country pickin' sounds you have EVER heard, then ... there's always room to shred!!! I had a steel player & harp player use this for recording, and had to put it under lock & key while they were in the studio. All guitarists that have played through have all pretty much drooled all over it (not literally). This is one amplifier I have never gotten tired of, but now, due to necessity, it's time to part. If you are a serious player, touring or otherwise; or, if you are a session player that wants to add some incredible vibe to anything you play ... you really do want this one! 1959 Fender Super Amp ...
